Greece has rejected a German proposal to appoint a European Union commissioner with the strength to veto Greek budgets.

German officials suggested the commissioner, appointed by the other eurozone finance ministers, would guarantee Greek federal government revenue was spent on spending off the country's huge debts.

But Greek officials have reacted angrily to the proposal, with a govt spokesman stating only Greece should have control about tax and shelling out.

The country's education and learning minister and former EU commissioner, Anna Diamantopoulou, rejected the idea as　 the merchandise of a ill imagination　.

Greece is failing to meet targets set by international lenders in return for bailout funds.

The proposal emerged forward of a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels on Monday and centered on a new fiscal pact.

But the European Commission stated there was no problem of Athens surrendering budgetary management.
